Job Title: Dental Hygienist

Reports to: Dentist

Vision/Ideal Outcomes of Position: The clinical hygienist is the best friend of all our patients. S/he provides the interpersonal relationships, education, and listening qualities that generate happy and loyal patients throughout the years. S/he provides a calm and warm environment for the patients and explains the treatment plan prescribed by the dentist to patients, reiterating the need to start treatment care as soon as possible. S/he educates the patients using visual tools, videos, and intra-oral camera pictures to alleviate their fears and concerns.

Job Specific:

  • Administer prophylaxis, periodontal treatments, antibiotics like arestin with scaling and root planing, sealants placement, fluoride treatment
  • Digital radiographs
  • Assist dentist with initial interview and comprehensive clinical examination
  • Intra-oral photographs
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Patient education
  • Charting
  • Supporting doctor during procedures
  • Records maintenance
  • May administer nitrous oxide
  • Make impressions for bite guards, diagnostic models, and bleaching trays
  • Use ultrasonic scalers when required
  • Administer topical local anesthesia when needed
  • Communicate and follow-up with patients during free time
  • Schedule follow-up appointments
  • Order and organize hygiene supplies, sharpen and sterilize instruments


  • Communication with front office regarding treatment plan scheduling
  • Take initiative when practice is behind schedule or understaffed
  • Participate in all team meetings
  • Discuss any problems or successes from the previous day

Practice Management:

  • Ask for referrals/testimonials
  • Thank patients for their business
  • Review schedule for any special needs or areas of concern
  • Participate in continuing education to expand skills
  • Debrief and hand-off patients for proper billing and scheduling
  • Organize back office and lab areas
  • Manage clinical inventory
